With numbers of participants increasing for events in Pembrokeshire, more and more cyclists unfamiliar with roads and routes in the county are choosing to visit several weeks prior to their events in order to familiarise themselves with our twists and climbs. Plenty of attention has been payed to St. Bride’s Hill in Saundersfoot, even earning the nickname Heartbreak Hill. Due to the 2 lap nature of Ironman Wales and the full LCW Wales rides Heartbreak Hill features twice in those events, however there are many more climbs in the events and some are rated more difficult than St. Bride’s Hill. Gaining course knowledge can prove invaluable on race day, especially with the unpredictable coastal weather in Pembrokeshire; the last thing you’ll want is not knowing where to push harder if you’re already battling the elements, equally, knowing where to squeeze the brakes and take some speed off can spare you from disaster – especially if the weather is unkind.
